In Ramsar in 2023, one of my practical tasks was squaring and setting out a site for the building plan. This is a part of construction that many people never notice once the building is complete. On site, however, it affects where the next stages begin. I treated the work as a responsibility to give the team clear reference points, not as a quick formality before masonry starts.

I first need to understand the plan and the actual boundaries and conditions in front of me. Drawings are essential, but the ground is where dimensions have to be checked. I take care with lines, corners and measurements, and I would rather pause to resolve a difference than let uncertainty pass to the next person. Checking the square and the relationship between the marked positions matters because later walls and openings depend on those positions.

Setting out also calls for communication. On a busy site, markers can be disturbed, access can change and different people may be working from the same references. I try to keep the work understandable to others and to explain any point that needs checking. My role was practical site execution; decisions about the design and structural specification belonged to the relevant professionals. Knowing the boundary of my role helps me do it responsibly.

The Ramsar work reinforced something I have seen throughout my construction experience: accuracy is easier to build in at the start than to repair at the end. It is the same principle I use when beginning a brick wall, aligning a partition or laying a paved area. I want a clear line, a measured start and a result that the next stage can build on with confidence. The visible finish may get the attention, but good execution begins much earlier.

I value that kind of careful preparation because it makes the work easier for everyone who comes after me on the site.
